I like that someone else has done the hard part -- choosing the design and the fabrics -- but I've never made a quilt from a kit.

Couple reasons -- what if I mess up the cutting and don't have enough fabric to finish? What if the store messes up and doesn't send all the fabric? (That happened to a friend.)

Plus, a quilt from a kit won't be original. There will be hundreds of others just like it (except for the quilting design).

But they're beautiful, especially the ones from Connecting Thread, and the price is reasonable.

Can you tell I'm trying to talk myself into trying one? What's your experience with kits been like?

I've personally never had a problem with a kit, but most of the ones I have done were made by the local quilt shop that I patronize. I do have one I purchased from Hancocks of Padukah waiting for me to cut out, but I have to finish two others before I start it. Even if there are lots of others out there, what are the chances of me ever seeing one. You can make it your own with your own embellishments and backing and I just think kits are great. Of course, I love ones where you get to choose everything yourself, too. Love to pick fabrics that coordinate and patterns to go with it. Maybe others with more experience can give you better opinions. Connecting threads ROCKS!

While I own several quilts that were done from kits between the 1930's and 1950's, I have never done one that involved patchwork. I have three that I am working on that are printed cross stitch. Two of them I did not care for the color suggestions and made changes according to my vision of the finished project. I say go for it.

I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend, til death, you're right to say it. Voltaire

Well I've made several from kits and they have turned out great. I've always had enough fabric. I love doing Bom quilts and some I pick my own fabric and some already have it. I have a Kaffee Faucet ?sp kit waiting on me now to make. Anyway if you do mess up you could probably get somemore from wherever you got the kit. Good experience for me.

Girl, don't force me to grab you by the arm and beat ya! Just GO FOR IT! The projects I have gotten from CT have had MORE than enough fabric. One kit I got had a "cut two" from a FQ and that was about 5% of the FQ. I don't think you'll have any problem with CT kits, can't say as for other companies. Besides, like stated above, you might decide to put one color of your own in there. Take a risk, drink blinky milk, change a quilt up just a wee bit. Just jump in and DRIVE! Big Grin Big Grin

I am about to start my first quilt from a kit. I fell in love with the quilt on the cover of the July issue of The Quilter. While I normally have no problem picking out my own fabrics, I was drawn to the fabrics used in this quilt. They spoke to me, I HAD to have them and despite my best efforts I could not find the fabrics locally. So I ordered from the Quilt Shop that offered the fabrics in the article. I got the fabric last week and I love it. Assuming the pattern in the magazine is accurate I will have enough fabric to complete the quilt top. So I say go for it!

I also say go for it. I have ordered many quilt kits & have had no problems. I do make a practice block out of scraps before I cut into the kit fabric. If by chance I cut wrong on the kit fabric, I can find something in my stash that blends with the kit.

Another alternative you might try if you are afraid to jump into the deep water is to try one of the Patchwork Party or Web Sampler events held a couple times a year! You get one block pattern and fabric from each of 12 different quilt shops. You then have the option of purchasing a finishing kit from any of the 12 shops, or you can purchase matching fabric or use what you already have to set the blocks any way you want. This gives you a totally different quilt from anyone else's! I just finished my own version of Patchwork Party Summer using Prairie Paisley from Moda. I purchased 12 blocks, made 3 more of my own from leftover scraps from the blocks, used purchased Prairie Paisley fabrics and set the 15 blocks with snowball blocks. Turned out very nicely if I do say so myself! I just took it to be quilted yesterday. I'm going to bind it myself with Prairie Paisley fabrics. I will post a picture when I get it back.
