I love my Creative Grids 6 1/2 x 12 1/2 for cutting smaller pieces after I have used the 6 1/2 x 24 for cutting strips.

JoAnn's sometimes has those packs of rulers with several square sizes. I love my small rulers for squaring blocks, but My favorite for cutting strips is my Olfa 5x 22 with the lip on the edge. Mine is old, and I believe they have made is larger now, so it's 6 x 24. one of those,and a 9 1/2 inch square were my first two rulers.

Thank you all so much for your input. I have narrowed the choice down to between the 12 1/2 square and the 6 by 18 rectangle.
