Im done with the 100 blocks for my grandmothers birthday quilt (she'll be 100) and am now putting them together to form the stars (25) ...that should take a day or two then on to the borders with applique.
I am also working on finishing up a UFO that was started in 1985 ...I had to take the border off because the blue disappearing pen did not disappear..

NDeb! I just LOVE your grandmother's quilt!! I can't wait to see it all together. She is going to be thrilled to have such a treasure made by you. And that's a beautiful UFO! I can't believe you put it away for so long!

northerndeb, your grandmother's blocks are beautiful! I can hardly wait to see the finished project! Your ufo is great too! it is a good reminder to all of us, to save all fabrics from a project until it is finished.

Thanks all! Jenell, I dont think the marking pens from the 80s were as good as what we have now. I didnt have it on very long, only 10 years ... But I thought, maybe I should test it, just to make sure it comes out... And it never did...that was back in the 90's...I was trying to get finished with it after 10 years of VERY SLOWLY hand quilting it.... So anyways, thats why it went back in the closet till now. I was just so mad and didnt feel like pulling all the border off and starting it again. I finished handquilting the center part today. So tonight, if I get a chance, Im going to start putting the border back on. Then I'll mark it with my silver pencil (I've tested this one..it comes out!). I dont think I'll ever buy a blue one again...

Im crossing my fingers that yours come out!

NDeb,
Just love your ufo. Is it tumbling blk pattern? It is going to be lovely. What can I say about Grandmothers quilt. Love the flower pattern. When you get it pieced together show us. Did you say there were 100 blks? How big is this quilt going to be?

It's not tumbling blocks but that was the idea. I had a piece of fabric that had all of these abc and numbered squares on it and they were separated by a little over a 1/2" so I cut them all apart leaving a quarter inch. I drew the finished sized square out on graph paper, then added lines to make it look 3 dimensional...cut those pieces out of paper and used as patterns for the other two sides of the block.

This was back before I knew how to quilt and how patterns were made. I just added 1/4 seams to anything I drew, and put it together. THATS why it's taking so darn long... I did everything the hard way back then! PLUS I fussy cut each piece of the block so that the stripes are going one way on the side pieces and the other on the top pieces ...NEVER AGAIN!! And what's really funny is the quilt isnt even a good size. It's smaller than a lap quilt. And wrong colors for a baby quilt. When it's finished, I think I'll put it away untill it's an antique .... that should be in about 2 years Roll Eyes

Grandmas quilt will be about 92" square... I guess I think of the block as the single bud ...that's a 6" square. I wanted 100 of these rose bud blocks for her 100 years. When I started playing with them, I like four coming together as a star, so I guess now 4 buds should be called a block... that would be 25 blocks. There's a border going all around with 4 vines (each vine starts with a bud and ends with one ... her 4 sons + 4 DILs) and then flowers on the vines... the flowers will be the grandchildren. Im working on the vines today. I'll take a pic when I get it all spread out somewhere. I have to wait till grandma goes in for her nap.
