Here is a crib size quilt that I have been working on.

I am going to put a border on it and then quilt a back for it.

I did not use a pattern because I had those 3 panels to work into the quilt.

You know, I have been reading that book to pre-schooler's for years. Just looking at this quilt I have finally figured out what bothered me about the drawings. Look at the butterfly. Why did Eric Carle put the butterfly's wings on upside down?

Now my warped mind is racing- what is the unwritten message? Is this a case of bad things happening to good butterflies? Or is this a metamorphosis defect, the result of lack of proper nutrition duing the catepiller's formative days? Maybe it is a hidden statement on the pesticide contaminating our food supplies. Or maybe the catepillar munched on some wacky tobacky and he is on a bad trip. Bad catepillar! Soon he's gonna want some chocolate brownies.

Enough silliness! It is a stunning quilt, you have captured the whimsy of the drawings by the juxtaposition of color in your strip-pieced border. Brilliant!

Meg you have way too much time on your hands to be picking on the poor little butterfly so much!

Meg I have read that book millions of times and I never noticed the butterfly either.

When my husband came in to look at the finished quilt he said, "how upset would you be if I told you that you had pieced it upside down?" I grimaced and he showed me the butterfly. I said it was in right and he said that was weird because the butterfly looks like the wings are on upside down.

I don't think it says much, except that Eric Carle doesn't follow all the rules. Wink
