I am having problems figuring this out and I don't think it should be this hard. I am making a table topper and it says;

"Fold red Flange pieces in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press. Baste flange to sides with raw edges even, and then to top and bottom" Confused

What is a FLANGE? Confused

Jacqui gave me some in site on it but I am still having some problems. Has anyone done this?

yes, I have, Jody. Hi, by the way! Smile A flange is inserted in between the centre/body of the quilt/topper and the border, to make a dimensional break between the two. I really like the look. What you will do is what you wrote up above. Do the sides first onto your centre with the fold to the inside (facing the pieced centre) - baste about 1/8" from the edge, so the stitching doesn't accidentally show later. Add the top and bottom. The corners will look loose and you'll think "I did something wrong!!!Argh!!!) no worries, you didn't.
Then you should be adding the first borders and enclosing the flange raw edge inside that seam. Make sense? The raw edges in the corners will be inside the seam.

Here's another example (I have one of her patterns, but don't see it here - it was one of her first) - the fabric right next to the pic LOOKS like it's sewn to the pic, but it's not
