Hi everyone

I'm wondering how many of you have quilting frames to use with a machine. If you have one, what do you like (or not like) about it?

I'm going to have to work some VERRRYYY long hours in October, and hence make some extra cash. So, I'm wondering if I want to get a frame or frame/longer arm machine combo. But, I'm also cheap (er, I mean frugal) and I don't want to spend money on something I'm not going to use, or that is simply too much for me.

Just to clarify, I will NOT be getting anything like a Gammill. The most I would get would be a HandiQuilter Sixteen, but I'm not sure if even that set-up would be getting more than I would need.

Clear as mud, eh?

I should add. I'm not wanting to go into business or anything. This would be for me - and the quilts I make.

Thanks

Good luck on your search and let us know what you decide on and why that choice.

I have always been interested in people who make me laugh!!! You can never have a dull moment with these people. And if you happen to have "one of those moments" then it's okay, they just laugh with you.

I bought a Pfaff Grand Quilter with the Inspira frame combo and it's great. The frame can take any make of machine but I would suggest that you go for a longer arm machine as it gives you a larger quilting area to work on. Remember you'll be working horizontally and this takes some getting used to and the fact that as you get to the bottom of the quilt so your quilting space decreases. I really like the fact that I don't have to fight with the weight of the quilt and the frame keeps the backing nice and smooth.

The Grand Quilter is the equivalent of the Husqvarna Mega Quilter - both are made by Viking.

I believe Elna has recently brought out a machine with a slightly longer arm and the Gracie frame is also very good.

Thanks so much for the info ladies.

Keep the ideas coming! Mary, I'm glad to hear you like your setup. As I look into my finances, etc. I do not think the HandiQuilter Sixteen will be a choice in the near future. But... I might be able to swing a mega quilter and frame. We shall see.

Thanks again

Right now my main machine is a Pfaff. If I had the room, I would look into the Pfaff Grand Quilter with the Inspira frame. What is the neck size on that, Mary?

don't forget to check out the Bailey 13 inch mid arm quilter. After hearing women say the 9 inch is not enough space, I think the 13 would be a great improvement.

They also have the option of Grace frames. This is my favorite right now. I have been searching for months and am READY to make a decision. Can anyone convince me this is NOT a good choice?

I have 10 tops waiting! I am rearing to go!!
