Yesterday I started with my first quiltproject. After a few babyquilts, with just squares, i'm trying now to get beginning of machinequilting. I browsed the internet for a long time, and found the most beautifull patterns,but I picked a quilt of six blocks and the blocks are all different. One block is an rail fence block, another a log cabin block. I think in this ways i learn to get the basics to create later on more difficult patterns.
The quilt is gonna be in white, red and blue and I wil name it Holland quilt 1.

I hope that i can make today a few pics of the "quilt".

Is although very strange for me to work with inches. I'm trying to reverse them to centimetres so i can make an imagination of it.

I agree with Jacqui, that's an great way to learn to quilt, and I wish I had done that!!! I want to do a similar quilt if I can ever finish these grandkids quilts.

This sounds very interesting can't wait to see pictures when you have them done. Rail fence and log cabin are good blocks to start with.

These inches make me confused every time

Gerda, do you have the Omnigrid rulers that are in inches? Those are the most common ones, and should make your measuring easier. 1 inch = 2.54 cm Multiply (maal) inches by 2.54. Example - 3 1/2" x 2.54 = 8.89 cm. Most patterns even from overseas, are written in inches. That's why it's best to use American rulers, if you are using american/british patterns etc.

Your blocks are super! What a wonderful choice of fabrics! You are doing great!!

thanks Gerda 1, no i have not rulers yet, i have a cheap one with inches, but thats the first thing i'm gonna buy. Can you recommend some brands?

Now i know that i really like quilting i can invest in some supplies, and rulers is one of them.

Omnigrid rulers are best. I would buy a 6" x 24", a 6,5" x 6,5" and a 12 1/2" square. I also have a 1" x 6" for drawing lines on squares to make half square triangles (a square with two different colour triangles - without cutting triangles).

You should always work with the same brand of rulers when making a quilt - not all manufacturers measurements are the same. Silly people! And a self healing rotary cutting mat and a 45mm rotary cutter are needed.

I don't know what shops are in Amsterdam, other than Den Haan & Wagenmakers, but I'm sure someone will sell them.

There are different brands of rotary cutters - hopefully you can try a couple of different ones - OLFA and FISKARS are the most common ones - very good ones!!

Good work Gerda #2. You will be off and running in no time. I agree with Gerda #1, good rulers are the very first must have for making quilts.
