The book I read for my machine quilting class said to clean and wax my machine before starting to quilt on it. What do you use for this, turtle wax, pledge?

Jenell, any good quality wax will work. I usually use DH's car wax. I also use pledge on the table that my quilt rests on, so that it moves easily when I want it to. A little goes a very long way, and make sure not to get the pledge on a hard surface floor, or you might slip on it. (Don't ask me how I know this, but a bleeding lip for 5 hours finally landed me at the urgent care clinic) LOL

sorry i have never heard of this before (not that i do alot of machine quilting as yet) so should i wax the machine where the quilt goes over? is there a risk the wax will stain the fabric?

The wax just helps the quilt slide around more easily. If you're averse to the idea, there are also mats you can buy that do the same thing. They're pricier, but if you do a lot of free-motion machine quilting, they can be handy.

I can't find the mats. Do you have a link to them?

I was also told you could just rub wax paper over your machine. I did this and it moved my fabric really good.
