I have heard of quilters who, instead of discarding their dryer sheets, recycled them for stablizer. The only real limitation is the size, but apparently it is firm enough to stabile the fabric without adding bulk.

Let me just make a comment please about the dryer sheets! No one knows if they will harm your quilts or not! History will only be the proof and that will take many, many years. I used to use them but I stopped. I would like to think anyway that some of my quilts will last forever! So personally, I've decided against using them.

Thanks,
Betty

Just about all of the string quilts I have made, go to my "kids" at Burn Camp. I don't want to add any extra scents to the quilts. Even after they have been used, they still have a scent. Never thought about what could happen to the fabric from the sheets as the quilt ages.

Meg-
I'm not trying to shoot you! Big Grin
I just wanted to let people think about the scent thing, espically when doing charity quilts. Like my kid's quilts. Sometimes with all the changes their little bodies have gone through, that 1 little thing added to their lives is "too much". I wash all of their quilts in Orvus Paste Soap. The scent from the soap is so light, the nurses that work with the kids have given that soap the "stamp of approval". You only use like a teaspoon of that soap in my washer. (I buy it at the Farm Supply Store by the 1/2 gallon)(How long is this going to last at a teaspoon per use???!) Wink

Wheeeeew! That's a relief! I had visions of doing the Mexican hat dance, trying to dodge those bullets, like in the westerns! And with this arthritis, I don't jump too good any more! LOL

Jami - the deli-paper is absolutely wonderful to use - my friend in NC sent me a whole box - she get it via a friend who owns a coffee-shop - wasn't I spoilt Smile

I have a friend here in SA who uses nappy-liners (think you call them diapers ? - anyway the things babies have to wear Smile ) as stabiliser - have no idea how they will last over time but I do know that they don't bio-degrade quickly or so the conservationists tell us.

Mary-
You don't see very many new moms using "real" diapers or nappies anymore. Most use the disposables for their babies. I think the studies have shown those things stay around forever because they don't bio-degrade. They won't even BURN! All for a little convienence(sp?)! Roll Eyes

It's the same here - almost everyone uses the disposables but one can still get the old-fashioned towelling ones and you're right the disposables are NOT disposable Smile.
