Sewwhat it takes a lot of practice.
I even quilted a full size quilt before someone told me I wasn't supposed to be able to do it. I did and it turned out wonderful for my 1st time free motion....
You have to get everything just right.. clear down to getting your table and chair the right hight.

I have one other suggestion for you that might help if it's the feeddogs getting in the way. Use a business card, cut a hole in it for your needle, place it over the feeddogs and tape in place. This will save your fabric from snagging on the feeddogs -- if that's actually the problem.
