I have high cholesterol but the triglicerides, LDL, HDL, etc., are okay but I have to lower my overall number, diet and exercise first then meds if it doesn't go down. I am eating steel cut oats daily, taking a fish oil capsule and a niacin capsule, eating more fruits and veggies. Sure hope this works. Has anyone had good results with diet and exercise in lowering cholesterol? My good friend did everything and nothing lowered her number so she is on meds.

Betty has had good results doing PRETTY MUCH what you've said. I cannot seem to get the diet part down - guess I like to eat too much. I try, and most of the time eat healthy, but . . . hmmmmmmm.

A friend of mine said she takes Red Yeast Rice to lower hers. I've been taking it, in fact need to get some more cuz I'm out. My doc says Red Yeast Rice is a natural statin. I also take TheraTears Nutrition, a combination of Fish Oil, Flax Seed Oil, and Vitamin E daily.

Linda, I bought some red rice yeast also, then read that only the red rice yeast that is prescribed by the Dr. will work, so I quit that, but have you tried Promise Super Shots? I have been doing that for a couple of months, I drink one little bottle each day. They contain plant sterols which lowers cholesterol. Maybe doing all this stuff together with help some. I really do like steel cut oats which I start the night before in my crockette. Now the diet.....

SadieSue, I have been on a low-fat low sugar diet for many, many years now. I get good results. I refuse to pay for medicine when the cost is so high!

Our family doctor told me that if I would watch my total fat grams...I keep mine at 30 per day and do not eat anything that has a saturated fat count of higher than 4 actually I usually stay at 3 and no trans fat at all.

I've had good check-ups when I behaved myself. What killed me was a couple of years ago having to watch my sugar. Now that is a problem! lol I love sweets and have no will power! lol

My cholestrol total count was 214 in November which with my family history is very good. It used to be over 260! lol My doc almost had the heart attach over it! The only thing that is good with me is that while my bad is high my good is very very good so I'm told I'm okay.

Having lost my Mother, Father and one brother at age 51 to heart disease I'm 62 so I watch myself closely. When I'm relaxed about it my husband takes over! lol

Good luck, it's not hard. I'm used to not eating any fried foods or anything with high fat. In fact, it makes me sick to do so. Can't handle grease any more!

Betty, sounds like you have it all under control. I am doing all that and now that spring is here I am doing my regular walking exercises so hopefully I will be going in the right direction too! Always something to worry about, but worrying raises cholesterol as well I am told.

SadieSue, yes stress is not a good thing so just watch what you eat and exercise at least 3 times a week for 20 minutes. That should do the trick.
