I have always been interested in people who make me laugh!!! You can never have a dull moment with these people. And if you happen to have "one of those moments" then it's okay, they just laugh with you.

Marsha McCloskey's book Quick Classic Quilts (Four Patches to Feathered Stars) has this in a much simpler version. four nine patches, a modified nine patch in the centre and large rectangles in the borders. I'll see if I can find a pic, other wise I can scan and send to someone to post - if that's allowed?

It makes an awesome quilt.

Eleanor Burns also had a book out on it (now out of print, and not on her site anymore) http://www.google.ca/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=burgoyne+...=Google+Search&meta=

QNM has it in one of their older issues - don't know which one

Still checking for a freebie, other than QCs that Deb found.

For those who didn't pay attention in history class, the Battle of Saratoga was a major battle of the Revolutionary war. It is important because an entire British army of 9000 men invading from Canada was captured thus ensuring that New England would not be cut off from the rest of the colonies.

The defeat of General John Burgoyne by General Horatio Gates impressed the French enough that they finally decided to lend their support and entered the conflict by coming to our aid.

As a quilt pattern, it shows how women of the day commemorated important events even if they were not permitted to actively participate.

Next question......

Thanks for the history, Meg, we didn't do American history over here when I was at school - just European and our own - so it's really interesting. However, I was a great fan of Wyatt Earp when I was a little girl - needless to say I was a tom-boy Smile

indigo blue cloth - white cotton thread

from wikipedia:
Sashiko (刺し子, Sashiko? literally "little stabs") is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches, this running-stitch technique is often used for purely decorative purposes in quilting and embroidery. The white cotton thread on the traditional indigo blue cloth gives sashiko its distinctive appearance, though decorative items somtimes use red thread.
