As a form of sewing : an Egyptian king is depicted as wearing a quilted cloak in 3500 BCE
The earliest surviving quilted object is a quilted linen carpet found in a Mongolian cave and dated 1st C BCE/2nd C CE.

Way to go, Mary! I didn't know the particulars, just that quilted fabrics had been found in Egypt and China. It's an old, old art that we do, isn't it? Who knew??

These are of my shwe shwe quilt that I made a month or two ago - you can see some of the fabric designs that are available and I've only used a small number - As you see there are lights and darks according to the amount of white design on the indigo cloth. The centres are various African prints not necessarily from S.Africa but the ones depicting the tribal ladies are a local cotton.

Mary-
I love the indigo fabrics in your quilt. I didn't know they were that varied! I wish we could get those fabrics here!

Jami, there's a quilter from St Louis that comes over to SA periodically and buys up crates of the indigo shwe shwe - we are always warned in advance of her arrival so we can buy any stock that we need before she comes because there's nothing left when she goes Smile - not sure if she has a shop.

Okay, here is my question. If the earliest quilted item is from Mongolia, and if warriors wore quilted garments as protection, how is it that Attila the Hun and his followers did not bring quilted garments with them when they settled in Hungary and Finland? I think Finland did end upo with a quilting tradition (for warmth) borrowed from their neighbors, but Hungary had no quilting tradition until millenia. Doesn't that seem odd?
