Hi all, I recently bought a Crazy Quilt at an auction and was wondering on how to display it. The quilt is in very GOOD condition, only 2 fabrics missing and the embroidery almost all intact. I would like to hang it but not sure if I should. With 2 cats it can't be draped anywhere, they both like to nap on quilts. Any suggestions?
Hi Nanciii' No I don't, there doesn't seem to be a place where my cats don't go. It's just a shame not to display this quilt somehow. I want my son to take pictures so I can post them.
Isnt it funny how if there were not a quilt there they would never get on it. If yours are like mine let me start laying one out to work on and Winston likes to drop and roll.. Its like they tell me it theirs and I cant have it. Its not like they dont have their quilt little blankets/quilts. Too funny.
My mother bought an antique crazy quilt and displayed in our living room for years. She attached a muslin sleeve to the back (be sure to wash the muslin to remove any sizing). My father installed a heavy-duty metal (brass, I think)decorative cafe rod, the kind with the fancy finials at the end. Wood is not a good idea, chemicals from the wood can leach into the fabric. They hung it on the interior south wall of a north facing room so no direct sunlight ever touched it. Before you display it, take care of those two fabrics. Either have them replaced with an old fabric or cover them with a very fine netting so nothing flakes off. Good luck. Please post a picture if you get a chance.
Thank you Meg, I never would have thought about the sizing in the fabric or about the wood dowel. I did buy a fine tulle to cover the 2 areas that have missing fabric. When I layout my quilt blocks on the floor to arrange them, I always need that cat approval. If one of them doesn't come to mess it up there must be something wrong with the arrangement. They are such critics sometimes!!
I am fortunate to have a crazy quilt made by my great-grandmother (not finished) and my grandmothers old Singer sewing machine. I draped the quilt over the table that holds the machine (with washed muslin underneath) and then put a silver service from my aunt on top of that(with muslin in between). I don't have cats, but my dogs do like to pull things down from tables. So far, so good. (I think they KNOW better on this one)

I believe cats & quilts go hand and hand...My cat likes my sewing table, which is in front of a window facing the lake. In the winter lots of birds, so she (Jenny the Cat) sit on my fabric and bird watches..I think we just have to accept the fact that if there is a quilt, you are bound to find the cat..

I'm new to the forum and was trying to catch up on some of the posts and came across yours above.
You didn't mention the size of the quilt but I really wouldn't recommend hanging it. I've seen lots of damage done not only to quilts but rare garments that were left hanging for a period of time. The smallest amount of weight on already fragile fibers will pull on them and weaken them more or destroy the weave completely.
Although it doesn't show off the quilt top much, a stack of folded quilts in an armoire with an open door looks great and wouldn't do the damage that hanging it would. Could you display it in a way similar to that? When people see it there, they'll still want you to take it out and unfold it for them to see so it's not like it would be hiding
