I just heard that the Wal-Mart stores are going to discontinue their fabric departmenst. there are many petitions on the internet to try to dissuade them from doing this. If your groups would like this address it is
Wal-mart/fabric petition.

I haven't heard if the one here in Stockton is going out or not. If it does that leaves me with Hancock and Bevery that are both more expensive than Walmart, especially for notions and supplies. I need to ask and will the next time I go. Inquiring minds need to know so I'll be an inquiring mind.

Ours here in Decatur is supposed to close by the end of the year, but the manager is fighting to keep it open. Our fabric dept. does a big business, largely due to the Amish population in our area. The number to call to complain about the closings is 1-800-walmart (1-800-925-6278). Supposedly the Wal-Marts are going to replace the fabric with scrapbooking supplies and wedding notions.

I know this is an old topic, but I asked a lady in the fabric department early this week about the closing of the department. She said that they will know by January. She said that it would help if lots of people would write to Wal-Mart and let them know how much we like to have the fabric section. I sent them an e-mail. Here is the page where you find the e-mail or the address to send them a note via snail mail.

I do not only buy fabrics at Wal-Mart, but it sure it's convinient and has good prices.

Give them a call or send them a note!

I was talking with a Wal-Mart employee and their policy is if there is a fabric store within 50 miles then that dept. gets scedualed for closing.

Hi, Mamma Kat, and welcome to the forum!! Please stay and join in on the fun and caring and such as goes on here! And would you please go to the introduction thread and tell us a bit about yourself?

As for WalMart, if they have the same rules up here in Canada, then most will close their departments, at least in the cities and towns around them. Fabricland is a large chain of fabrics of all sorts here, and are getting more and better quality cottons for quilters. Hmmm. Drats! WalMart does sell some nice stuff, even if the selection is miniscule, and the same fabric shows up for over a year!

Come back, soon, y'hear?? Smile

Well, they built a new supercenter here sans fabric! I am still mad and the store has been up for months now! It's just not the same! They still have sewing notions (not thread though.) They have ribbon and yarn for knitting and crocheting, needles, pins, rotary cutters, scissors and everything else you could need to sew but NOT material! I don't know what Einstein came up with the idea not to have fabric anymore but it has really made me mad! Just my 2 cents LOL!

We have a Hobby Lobby here and also a Hancocks (which I have heard is closing as well.) We also have a quilting store but their fabrics are pretty high in price. I would buy from Wal Mart b/c their prices were good in my opinion. I bought the valance fabric for my living room and breakfast room there and it's simply beautiful and didn't cost me a small fortune. I priced fabric at other places and it was extremely high for the amount that I needed. The store in Eufaula where my parent's live still has fabric so I do browse through there when I'm home and have time also the supercenter in Phenix City which is the town next to Columbus still has fabric but I really don't like going over there. It's not really far but I have never felt 100 % safe in that part of the area for some reason however if hubby can go with me I do go look through their fabric. The new supercenter in Columbus is within 7 miles if not less from my house Frown
