Hi, girls! I really want to get started on quilting this but have no real ideas on how to since the blocks are all different. Any suggestions? I asked Kim but she has not replied yet.

This is a sampler quilt, right? I think you have two choices that would look good. One would be to quilt following the the design of each block. Not necessarily stitch-in-the-ditch, following the dominant color in each block. Then do something more flowing and undulating on those beautiful wide boarders. Is the sashing wide enough to quilt? I would do something curvy there too.

The other choice would be to do something curvy on the sashing. Crosshatch each block, totally ignoring the pattern. Go back to something flowing for the boarder. That's how I would do it if it were my quilt.

Yes Meg, it is a sampler quilt. I like the crosshatch the block and something curvy on the sashing...maybe just random vines with stars done free motion, and then I can do sort of cables maybe on the border. I guess I have to buy a new roll of borders on a roll for this. I've tried that before and it seems to work. I still have some left, but I don't know if it's enough and I've already used the corners. Thanks for the great suggestion!

pics???? Big Grin lol

seriously, sounds like a fantastic idea - altho, perhaps with the stars, maybe instead of "vines" you could freehand the "star tails", you know like a shooting star? i know i'm not using the right words for the description, but we all know what a shooting star looks like so i think you got the direction my imagination is taking . . . just another humble opinion Big Grin
and i can't wait to see the finished quilt!

Hi Tata, I am doing this quilt( really must get those borders on Roll Eyes) I was thinking maybe an all over pattern, something like culrycues etc. that would cross over the boundaries....... but then again I am not very experienced so best wait til others get here to answer lol

I just got my 9 Patch Nirvana back from the quilter and I had her do a very simple pattern all over it. This quilt has special significance to me so I wanted the piecing to be the star on this one. Can't wait to see yours finished Tata.

WOW You have another quilt top ready to quilt! I can't wait to see pictures of it finished! W2G!!!

I didn't start this one this year to many from the year before needing put together. Maybe that will be my goal for next year, to finish my 2006 blocks into tops and have them quilted!!!

I will send my tops out so I am no help with the stitching, best of luck.

You know on second thought this is one of the tops that I started and I like a block or two only having mine finished too! Maybe I can do that this week sometime...

Happy Quilting!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Looks like the common theme is stars and curlicues. I still have to get my backing and will check out Hancocks of Paducah for nice Moda backs since this was all Moda fabric. And then I have to order the Borders Made Easy. They came up with new ones on their website, more geometric shapes than their original cables. I just don't look forward to putting this sandwich together, but my spray baster did its job the last time on the blue & white quilt with no pucker at the back (or front) so I think I got the process right after a while. Don't hold your breath for pics of the finished quilt...it's hard to find the time nowadays...back to my new love SUDOKU!

My gosh Tata!
How do you find time to finish so many projects? I have to say I'm in agreement with the ladies who have replied...I like stars and curlicues. The book for the sampler that I just finished the top for takes you through the quilting portion by having you stitch in the ditch for many of the blocks. You basically follow the general pattern of the block, with some extra embellishment on certain ones (like the basket). Then for the sashing you just "go for it". I'm sure whatever you choose will be fabulous.
