What’s that saying? Necessity Is The Mother of Invention!! I just have to share this tip!! It’s a major WHOHOHOOOOO!!!
I was starting a new quilt awhile ago….and the lighting in my sewing room is not the best at night. I have plenty of lights (even a couple Otts), but for some reason the light is never quite enough for me at night. My eyes were tired…and I was having trouble seeing the grids on my ruler while cutting. Sooo… I got the idea to go get the headlamp we use in the winter if we have to go outside at night. It’s a little LED lamp on a head band that throws very BRIGHT LIGHT in about a 4” circle. It’s made by Wenzel, but I don’t think the brand matters. It worked like a CHARM! Once I adjusted the lamp to point right where I looked at the ruler my problem was solved! It was daylight BRIGHT right where I was working and my hands were free.
I tell ya…EVERYONE needs one of these! I got mine off of Overstock several years ago, but I think you can get them in any big box, or sporting goods/outdoor store. Wenzel Headlamps
It looks a little goofy, but who cares!!..lol What a huge difference it made for me!

I am getting a picture here of my friend "Dirt Ball" Felicia spelunking through her fabric stash with her headlamp on and a big grin of her face ... it is making me smile

Oh boy…lol I’m REALLY getting a daft image in my brain of what THAT would look like Pat….lolol Carl did chuckle when I came trotting out of my sewing room wearing a head lamp! In my WAYYYYY younger days I used to be a novice level “spelunker” so I do know what that means…lolol Very funny! I’m not joking… my 55+-something eyes are not what they used to be and that little extra zap of light made a HUGE difference for me…lolol However….it really does a number on a hairdo…lol I never imagined that little light would come in so handy. Carl uses it when he’s working on electronics, and we use it often in the winter when it gets dark so early. I got my son one the same year (as a stocking stuffer) and he uses it all the time when he works on his truck.

Felicia, What a great idea! I'm going to try it because I know how difficult reading lines on the ruler can be with shadows in the sewing room. Gregg & I use them when the power goes off during a storm to read a book or play games. The funny part is looking up at each other with these head lights on. Wishing you a good day. Rebecca P

I'm sorry but the picture painted in my head is quite hilarious...thanks for the giggle!
I seem to have the mother of all lights over my kitchen table where I sew/quilt. But this is a great idea! Especially when DS wants me to shut off all the lights so he can have a theatre in the living room.
Now I know what to get for my 89 year old mother who isn't ready to give up quilting, but can't see too well! And I'm telling her it was all your fault, Felica! LOL
Felicia, this is actually a great idea for my hand-stitching. I am always moving the fabric to see the seam better. Since I do this a lot in the evening when the other lights in the house are down for the night, a bright focused, hands-free light like that should be a big help!
Thanks for the idea ... I have one that I used for reading once when I took a long bus trip ... I never thought to use it for sewing.

Glad you are onboard with this one! I may buy a second headlamp just for my sewing room. The one I have now has multi-uses (like the garage)...and I don't want dirt or grease ending up on any fabric.
We have an interior bathroom with NO WINDOWS..and last winter during a big storm...I was *ahem* IN THERE... ..and suddenly it was blacker then the inside of a cow's belly (the power had gone out)! That's a bad place to go to the "brail" method. Now...I keep a small battery lantern in the TP cupboard...lol That was a lesson learned...lol
