Jami, I'll do that. It works when I use Thangles. The paper tears off easy.

Boy howdy! I just put the first row together, and next time for sure I'm using a paper foundation. There are 4 layers of fabric at the seams, and when I match those seams with the other rows, that's gonna be kinda bulky.

Maybe I'll do sashing. Or maybe not. I can't decide.

Jami,
Thank you for the deli paper. It was so sweet of you to send them. I haven't had a chance to try the out yet, but will do so soon. I just finished a top for one of your kids for the burn camp. I think it turned out nice. Had to go today to get backing fabric I will bast & quilt tomorrow.

Do you all know about the heartstrings quilt project? This is a group of ladies that are collecting string squares and putting them together to make donation quilts for a wide variety of charities. You can send them just a block or an entire quilt top. There are guidelines on their website for how they want their blocks made so it is easier for them to put the quilts together. Here's the link: heartstringsquiltproject.com

Our Costco does have Kabnet wax paper. It is 2 boxes of 500 sheets for around $11.

Well...summer break is here and I took my DD(9) out to sew string blocks. She doesn't like it because she can't keep her raw edges lined up and on her foundation. We've scrapped that project and now she's just sewing whatever strips that she finds in the scrapbox together to be cut to the same width later for either borders or to make something like chinese coins. The strips aren't all the same width so I'm not sure what to call it. She can do it and she's not getting frustrated with it. It's keeping her busy and happy so that's all that matters.

Busy and happy is good!

I don't think I would have been comfortable with a sewing machine when I was that age. We sewed in Home Ec but I was 12 or 13, and even then it was kinda scary. Man, I ripped out a lot of seams. I wish we had started with something like a quilt top instead of actual clothing that we were expected to wear. White with big green polkadots, anyone? Yeah, I looked like somebody splattered me with paint in that dress. Big Grin

I think it's cool that you'll have strips all ready to go for whatever you decide to use them for. Kudos to your DD for not giving up!

She's always been interested in sewing on the machine. I've tried to teach her how to do simple blocks like pinwheel and 4-patches but she got bored with it quickly. We even tried a double pinwheel and she didn't stick with it. I forgot to mention that she's ADHD and her attention span is short, not to mention she can't sit still for long due to the hyperactivity. It was great to have her to be able to sit and sew for nearly the whole day. She is on a med. She wears a 9-hour patch called Daytrana. It dispenses 15mg of meds a little at a time all day over a 9-hour period of time. If she wasn't on meds, she would almost impossible to deal with.

after reading all of your comments on the "string quilts" I just had to see and now I want to make one. But I need to finish the quilts that I have started. I have started a list of things that I want to do when I am done.

1. Amish quilt
2. my sons first year quilt
3. string
4. applicay (because I can't spell)
5. floral print
6. and so on

Here's a photo of my string quilt -- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/AuntiePam/Quilts/CIMG0457.jpg

Next time (and there will be a next time), I'll do a planned one. With this one, I didn't bother with lining up the first strips -- it was all random. I like it okay, but I'd like a planned one more.
