3" in a string quilt works for me, Jenell. I am assuming she was talking about blocks with some structure to them. Personally, I am not that fussy and don't bother to measure the width of the strip, if I like it, it goes in. Remember, this suggestion is what works for her. You may accept or ignore those suggestions based on your own comfort level. But then, you know me, product of the 60's, flower child, habitual questioner of authority..... if I tend to ignore the quilt police, you can bet their special forces S.M.U.T. (Strip Measuring Uniformity Team) won't intimidate me either.

Hi Rose, Yes, Ms. Quiltville was referring to a structured quilt rather than string. Down with the Quilt Police and their special forces!!! I'm still cutting strips and tucking them away for the next project. I am happy to say that all the bags of scraps and the boxes of fabric and bits of leftovers are disappearing rapidly, being cut into nice neat strips and blocks/logs. Can't wait to start another scrappy quilt - they are my fav. But the celtic will have to come first. d

As I am cutting fabrics for quilts, I tend to sort larger scraps that are 3.5 or wider, by color group into plastic drawers that I can pull out when I want to look for scraps by color. When I have less than 3.5 inches left of a piece, I cut it into one or two strips, and then put them into bins by size. Color doesn't matter. I have a bin for 1.5, 2., 2.25, 2.5, 2.75 and 3.o. ready for string quilts, log cabins, or any other project that I might do. The wider strips work great for happy block borders!

I'm doing a scrappy quilt right now, by going thru my scrap box and cutting random width strips and doing a version of Roman Stripe. It's 1/2 square triangles of a strip half and a light half. It's going to be pretty! Janie W.

Chelsey, that all depends on what you're going to do with it! It can really look great either way. Try this site http://quiltville.com/stringquiltingprimer.shtml . They really have a lot of great ideas and can give you some inspiration with regard to layout. Have fun!!
