Hi All!
I was in a sampler block exchange several months ago and want to get the blocks put together. They are all done in blues and yellows with white background fabric. Most of them are in the medium to dark color range. Any suggestions for sashing and cornerstones would be welcome. I just seem to be drawing a complete blank when it comes to my piecing here lately. I'm trying to get some of my UFO's finished up and this is one of them. I think I have enough 12" blocks to piece 2 if not 3 tops from this swap. I'll use them for my Kids that attend Burn Camp in the summer. Thanks in advance! Jami This message has been edited. Last edited by: Jami, SamplerBlocksa.JPG (50 Kb, 75 downloads) |

Jami,
I never do very well trying to think up in my mind what color(s) to use. I take my blocks into Hancock's (I like their store because there is a lot of room to lay things out) and I start laying them on fabrics that I think might work. It doesn't take long to figure out what will and won't work. I do try for some contrast because I don't prefer things that all blend together. One of my beginning quilters used very traditional blue and yellow fabrics in her sampler quilt. When we started looking for fabric, we had no idea what to use for sashing. We tried a lot of fabrics and we ended up getting a blue and white plaid type fabric. I never would have thought of it, but it was absolutely perfect with her blocks. Vicky |

That's a great idea, taking the block with you to see what will or will not go with it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Jami, I did Sampler Quilt last year where the blocks were bright blue, yellow, emerald green and white. The inner border was emerald green and other was dark midnight blue! I don't have the thing together but I've bought the fabric right then! Goodnes this reminds me I need to spend time the first of the year not staring new projects but finishing old ones. I have about 4 quilt tops I need to get together!

Jami, for me that's the fun part (also a tad aggravating at times, as you are finding). I would see what lighter shades would look like. I lay my blocks out on a piece of fabric I think would work, and cut a couple of squares for cornerstones, laying them on top. But the best suggestion is to do as Vicky said - take some or all of them to a quilt shop/fabric shop and try different ones. There may very well be some ladies there who would make suggestions.
Sometimes a completely different colour works, too. I was in a Saturday Sampler BOM a couple of years ago, and the colours were yellow, green and blue. The series was called Ode to Aging, and I was ticked that there were no reds or purples in it! Didn't the lady picking the colours know that poem??? So anyway, I bordered 5 blocks with dark purple mottle, and 4 with red mottle. I have to figure out a border fabric yet - I have some Red Hat fabric, but it doesn't go with it. But I digress (thanks for the word, Meg! Gerda A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels. Keep looking UP! When it seems there is no way out, there is always a way up! |

Those are some awesome blocks that you have created, just beauitiful. You can never go wrong with yellow and blue. Blue sashing would look good with them, then add a border with blue, narrow yellow and another blue and you would be set! Maybe even a couple medium striops of white in the mix just depends on how large you want your quilt top. IMHO just a thought anyway. Happy Quilting! I would go with white sashing and blue or yellow cornerstones. For borders, I have to agree with Deb. I love the blocks, especially the centre one - that's neat!
Since this is for a child, maybe a novelty print for the outer border that has lots of blue and yellow? Oh, oh, I'm confusing the issue again! Gerda A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels. Keep looking UP! When it seems there is no way out, there is always a way up! |

Hi Jami,
I think I would use black/gray mottled - maybe like an attic window. Have you started on your quilts for next year for the kids at camp? Lauren Sometimes you just have to step aside and let God take over. Don't forget to laugh today! |
