Hi y'all! A neighbor of mine is looking for someone to handquilt her handpieced quilt that her mother made for her. Do you have any recommendations I can forward? It would be good if I can direct these parties directly to her address, preferably with brochures and pricing info. Would appreciate all leads!

Tata-
I would have her check around at your local Churches. A lot of them in the south have ladies groups that do hand quilting. Ask around at the local quilt stores to see if they have any names of handquilters. That is the best I can come up with at the moment.

Just be sure to look at their work first! I have seen some that shocked me, it was so bad. And in stores where the specialty is quilts!

I have a friend in MO who has done hand quilting for many years, growing up helping her mother do hand quilting. I can get you some photos and what her fees are. I know she charges by the yard of thread. You may write to me for any other information. I will be able to get answers for you.

I vote for Nola! Her work is beautiful! Nola lives not too far from Shipshewana, a big Amish/Mennoite community in Indiana. She might be able to hook you up with a hand quilter. If not, I have family in and around Amish/Mennonite communities in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. DABell lives near an enclave in Clare, MI. She would be another possibility to find a hand-quilter.

Did I hear my name mentioned!! Actually, I'm blushing - thanks for the praise, Meg & Jenell!

Tata, I charge 50 cents a yard for hand-quilting, just to give you an idea of prices. I'd be interested in quilting your neighbor's quilt, but have one ahead that won't be finished until late Winter at the earliest. But if she wouldn't mind waiting until I get this one done, I'd be interested. Can you give me an idea of the size, what is the pattern - pieced or appliqued, etc.?

For an idea of price, the queen-size Rose Quilt that I finished this past Spring, had a LOT of quilting - the price for it would have been $350, with another $30 for binding. However, the lady who owned the quilt (she's obviously very well-to-do) paid me $2000. I nearly fainted when she handed me the check.

I'd guess that a Full-Size quilt would run $150 to $200 for the quilting, depending of course, on the amount of quilting. And I charge $20 to bind a full-size quilt, $30 for a queen-size one, $15 for twin size.

I don't have any brochures made up - guess I could probably make some - but I'd be happy to send you a couple pictures of the Rose quilt - I have duplicates - and the actual picture would show the quilting better than the pic I posted on here. I do have some pictures of a few baby quilts I made that show the quilting quite well.

Just let me know - - -

Hugs,
Nola

Nola, I'm curious. That 50 cent a yard...is that a yard of thread? or per yard of material? I've always been curious how much someone would charge for that. It's something to put in my hat for maybe making a few extra dollars.

That must of been a nice surprise, that $2000. check!

Dorian, that's 50 cents a yard of thread. My prices are about average, or slightly below. Some ladies charge 70 cents a yard or more. For the Rose quilt, I charged 60 cents a yard because it was terribly hard quilting - I had to quilt "in the ditch" between 6,460 tiny 1 inch squares. And I absolutely HATE quilting in the ditch! I lost count of the number of needles I broke! Of course, it didn't really matter how much I charged for that quilt since the owner was so generous. I still have about half of that $2000 check. Saved enough back to pay the property taxes. Bought my new computer with part of it. Believe me, it was a windfall at exactly the right time!!

I remember 45 years ago when my Grandma was making quilts, some of the church ladies quilted a couple for her. They charged the huge sum of 10 cents a yard!

There are very few people around here now who do hand-quilting. A couple church groups I know of, a few Amish ladies, and one or two others. I could probably have all the work I want, and then some, if I'd advertise - but then I wouldn't have time for all the other things I like to do. So if I can quilt two or three a year for others, I'm making a bit of "fun money" for myself, and still have time to make quilts for myself, and all the other fun things in life.
