Wendy! You go, girl! My mother made a triple star banner for her mother-in-law during the war. Isn't it odd how those of us who can remember JFK, Elvis, Motown, Ed Sullivan, Gene Autry and the Howdy Doody Show still refer to WWII as "the war"?

Her banner had two blue stars and one gold. I have no idea whatever happened to it. Guess I should write to my aunt and two survivng uncles and see if anyone knows its whereabouts. This brings up an interesting question. When making a banner with both color stars, who does one determine the placement of the colors. Does anyone know? I am going to do some research on this.

I found this on the American Legion website in regards to Blue Star service flags:

If the individual symbolized is killed or dies while serving, the star representing that individual will have superimposed on it a gold star of smaller size so that the blue forms a border. On flags displaying multiple stars, including gold stars, when the flags are suspended as against a wall, the gold star(s) will be to the right of, or above the blue star(s), a place of honor nearest the staff.

Also did some reading on the Blue Star Mothers- did not know that even though the flags go back to WWI, the very first chapter was started right here in Michigan during WWII in Flint, amd was mentioned in the Congressional Record in February 1942. Chapters spread out from there and in 1960 Congress enacted a charter for them.

Thank you all so much for your help. Wendy, I think the one you sent is just what I'm looking for!! Although, I think that the star is supposed to be slightly smaller and more centered, but I can do that no problem.

Thanks again!
Delia
