Hello,
I was "window shopping" in ebay this morning and came across some quilt blocks...I've never heard of or seen before.
The name of them is Spool Wheel. I'm not advertising this by any means. I'm sure if you go to ebay and put in spool wheel quilt it will come up.
Sorry I can't put the link but it's probably not kosher.
It reminds me of the Jack's Chain block, but different. Does that make sense?
Anyway, let me know what you think or if you know of any other names for it.
Thanks
KimUk

Kim those are so gorgeous! This link tells of a show tomorrow that has got to be close to these blocks. I'm on the slow speed here so I can't get to it but it looks like Fons and Porter knew just what you were looking for.

Hi KimUK,
Went to ebay and looked at it. Seems it does have another name---Castle Wall.Found the pattern at
http://www.quiltbus.com/Free-Quilt-Blocks.htm

There are two Castle wall block patterns. Click on the second one and you will get Jinny Beyer's site.

This has been added to my to-do list.

This is another example of the wheel being re-invented, pardon the pun. The second example (the Jinny Beyer site) from the link that Trina mentions is also identified as Castle Wall in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilts. It first appeared in the Kansas City Star in 1931.

The other block from Trina's link is identified by Brackman by several names: Prosperity Block (Nancy Cabot, 1933; Prairie Farmer, Book 1, 1931), Jackson (Hearth & Home), Miss Jackson (Ladies Art Co., #479 pub. between 1922 & 1928), Empty Spools (Nancy Page), Wisconsin Star (Detroit Free Press). I did not find it identified anywhere as Castle Wall except on the Quilter's Cache site.

Nowhere, in my reference material anyway, did I find the find the block listed as Castle Wall referred to as Spool Wheel, except of course, on eBay. In fact, I could no block by that name.

My guess would be, that since the blocks on eBay seem to have been made in the 40's or early 50's (judging from the fabrics), that either the piecer had seen a quilt, but did not know the name or else the seller on eBat did not do enough research.

They are beautiful, but too rich for my blood, or at least my pocketbook.

I thought they were great, but I cannot afford them and I worry about how sturdy they are. I really thought it was an interesting block though.
Glad I could share and thanks folks for all your help.
