Hello,

At a quilt show last weekend I fell in LOVE with this topsy-turvy star quilt. The photos do NOT do it justice. They called the quilt "Christmas Star", but I have not found any block named that.

Here's the photo...if anyone can point me towards the actual pattern I'd be most HAPPY!

Felicia,
I wonder if the quilter made her own stars. The way we were shown as kids in school. I feel as though I have seen instructions on how to make this type of star somewhere. Can't promise anything. But I will look and see what I can find.

I like the quilt too.Now I want to make it. Smile

While I am looking through my magazines, here is a place that sells a pattern similar to the quilt---

I hope it showed up.

Felicia, Trina ...

Take a look at this ...

http://www.quilterscache.com/F/FivePointedStarBlock.html

It looks like you could easily adapt this block to achieve this pattern.

You could use this as a basic pattern and instead of making each block exactly the same, you could change the cuts and angles on some of them ... and add a different fabric "point" to the largest triangle in the middle. Use scraps or a large selection of fabrics ro make it look scrappy.

I would be sure to make them all a bit oversize in the outside pieces so they can be squared and cut down to all the same size.

You could have a lot of fun playing with the fabric and pieces on this one!

Felicia -

There is an easy way to make stars like these. Fons and Porter made a quilt that had stars like that. I made a couple - there was no pattern. It's hard to explain, but easy to do.

Remember how you used to draw a star when you were a kid? You just do that, only instead of drawing the lines, you cut on them - one at a time. If you stack up 10 blocks of fabric, and cut one line then switch the top piece to the bottom before you sew them all together on that line, then stack them up again, make the second cut, etc, etc, you will get 10 blocks with all the fabrics in different places on the star. I know - clear as mud, right? LOL! Doing it this way SOME of the seams don't quite match up, but if you look at the pictures you took, you can see where some of the points are not exact. But they don't show when you look at the quilt as a whole.

Please PM me off line - it would be easier for me to tell you on the phone than explain the process. But it IS easy.

EekWHAT THE HECK??? I just had the CRAZIEST thing happen in here!!!!! Eek

Linda-O..
Your post to me (in here) showed up as one from Kerstin/Cookie!!! I SWEAR I DON'T DRINK! When I first looked at this thread there was your response but clearly showing Cookie as the person who wrote it. Yet...BELOW it said it had been last edited by YOU??? So... I clicked RIGHT on the name showing as the person who posted (which was Cookie and actually TEASED her in PM asking her HOW was she going to call me from Germany?... I AM NOT KIDDING...LOL Then I refreshed the page to come back to thank everyone for trying to help me...and Cookie's name is gone...and your name shows on the post. Ghost... BC has ghosts...lol I swear I'm NOT NUTS..lol

Well.....talking to TX makes a WHOLE LOT more sense then calling Germany to yak...lol

Anyhow...when I came back to the link...Cookies name name no longer shows up on the post...but yours does!!! Wow...that was a big glitch that seems to have corrected it's self.

Now...speaking to TX is much easier then Germany. I have free long distance so I'd love a few tips. So...if these stars were free handed then they are appliqued onto the crazy block?

Thanks also to Pat, Trina and NOW...COOKIE AGAIN... only NOW... Cookie's post to me now shows 4 TIMES IN A ROW...LOL

Me thinks I better reboot my computer. I have a gremlin lurking...lol

Thanks again to all for the help... let me reboot...then I'll be back.

LOL..this is getting crazy

You musta looked at it right after the first goof-up. LOL

WHEW! We finally got it right! LOL!

Cookie and I have been IMing through this. HEH HEH

Yep and nope - LOL - the stars ARE free-handed, but when you get done you also have the backgrounds. Only - and I see one problem - with this method they would be scrappy - backgrounds and all. So - maybe this wouldn't work?
