I inherited an orchid when my Grandma passed away and of all things for them to give me, an orchid plant. (my green thumb is never green!) So it bloomed last May and not a thing since. It is in a really small pot and I was reluctant to change it because Grandma always knew best. So all free advice will be appreciated.

Jennell-
Funny you should ask- Martha Stewart just did a segment yesterday on orchids. Here is a link showing how to re-pot them; hope it is helpful. http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem....0a0aRCRD&rsc=related Meg Proud Coastie Mom http://www.myquiltblog.com/ohiorose53/ http://www.serialquilters.com/ohiorose53 I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend, til death, you're right to say it. Hi Jenell,
I grow some orchids. It would help to know what kind of orchid (do you have a photo?). Some orchids are super fussy...and some are super easy. I've grown both kinds, but finally got smart and now I o-n-l-y grow Phalaenopsis (the Moth orchid). They are as easy as them come (to grow) if they are happy with their light situation. Phals only bloom once a year as a rule, but when they go into a bloom cycle they bloom for about 4-6 months. I’ve had one blooming since late last fall...lol Your Grams orchid may be just resting between bloom cycles. For me...my orchids bloom best when they look like tarantulas and have air roots shooting out everywhere...lol They all need to be repotted at the moment. I have not repotted them in a few years. Here’s a link that will show you what a Phal looks like... but don’t get bogged down in any huge intricate details about growing them. IF your orchid blooms look like these orchids then you have the Moth or common house orchid. Orchid link poof* |

I have a Phal Reid gave me for mothers day a couple years ago. It had bloomed for 4 months then nothing then it started getting the beginnings of a bloom, but the leaves started to die. My aunt gave it some tea and told me to do that once a week and man it is doing so well now. I don't know what's in the tea but its working

I read on the tag last night it's AnniBillie, I assume that is short for the technical name. It does look like it's growing legs so I will be sure to repot it soon. Thanks ya'll!

I'm sorry you lost your orchids, but thrilled your other plants are thriving! Orchids are funny critters. I really abuse mine, but they are well acclimatized to my home. Matter of fact...4 out of the 7 I have now I bought off the internet right after my fire which was 4+ years ago. I could not grow orchids like this when I lived in Idaho. I’m convinced I do have atmospheric blessings from the coastal humidity that keeps them extra happy. Other then that I just hit them with some orchid food once in awhile and when they are bone dry... I flood them with lightly fertilized aged water. I also grow them in moss...not bark.
I'll post more photos as the others bloom. Hugs.. poof* |
