My neighbor found about an 18 inch long piece of petrified tree. It had a vine wrapped around it, about the size of poison ivy, and of course it petrified right on it. The piece of tree trunk has little divets (like a golf ball)in a very organized pattern all over it. Anyone know what kind of tree it could be?
HapE-Most species of tree that are petrified are noe extinct. You don't say if you found it in your backyard or where, but my advice is take it to a college that has a good geology section.
Ned, thank you so much for the info. I will get a picture posted later today. We live at a lake, in a rather remote area that was formerly farm property. The nearest town is over 25 miles away. If we didn't have to go out of town today, I'd get that pic posted now. Sounds like you know a lot and my curiosity is killing me!
