Anybody have one? My BFF was offered one by a former colleague from work. He could not get it to bloom because his yard was too shady. She also had the same problem so offered it to me. She knew how much I love the fragrance! This will be the third summer, and it has yet to bloom, keeping my fingers crossed for this spring!

Am having a problem with runners. I know they need to be pruned in order to keep the shape of the tree and not revert to a vine. Just not sure how to accomplish this. I think someone told me to use a spade and dig straight down to cut the roots and kill the runner. Does this sound right? If so, then don't I also need to keep the top pruned back so it doesn't get top heavy and fall? So far, we have kept it staked, but I would like to remove them at some point.

Meg, wisteria will get away from you if you don't keep ALL runners mowed down. A neighbor where I used to live let his get away and it was in the process of taking over my woods when I moved. Everywhere it touches the ground, it puts down roots. Even if you dig it, if a tiny piece of root is left, it comes back.

As you can probably tell, I wouldn't have it at any price!!! Big Grin But if you have it in a place where you can mow around it to get every little bit, it can be controlled. Good luck.

Mowing isn't going to cut it, figuratively speaking anyway. It is in a flower bed, and I am NOT mowing down my iris! That's why I asked about the spade and the branch pruning.

It's worth a try, but keep a close eye out for shoots coming up around the main tree. I'm not sure if they spread by seed as well as above ground runners, but they might. And it's also possible that it may put up shoots from the roots. I really don't know.

If you know anything about kudzu, I rank wisteria right up there with kudzu in its ability to spread. (If you don't know kudzu, believe me, it's BAD!)

Yeah, I know kudzu. I lived in the south as a kid.

I tried for years in vain to start wisteria from seed from MIL's vine. Wouldn't that just be rubbing salt into the wound if now, after all these years, I have little wisteria sprouts all over?!?!? LOL

As much as I love this tree, I am thinking I may have to donate it to niece. Their front yard is about 2 acres, and I am thinking it is just too crowded in my humble little yard.

I have decided I am going to move it to another location where it will be easier to prune; just as soon as it finishes blooming! I am estatic! Banana Apple Banana there are one two or three blooms, so it's not much to look at right now, but I am so relieved, didn't think this was ever going to happen!

Big Grin Rose-just dig your spade in about 4-5" at the distance from trunk you want the branches on top to grow-the drip line. That should slice the runners off.

Wisteria can't be stopped that easily, believe me!!!! It puts down roots wherever it touches the ground.
