One of the ladies at the Honey Barn quilt shop showed me this pattern. It starts with a basic 9-patch -- 9 squares in 3 rows. Then you cut the block through the center -- once vertically and once horizontally. Then you rotate the two pieces and stitch them back together to make a block.
Lay the blocks out any way you like. Here are photos of one block and of a whole quilt.
This looks like a very good pattern for a novice! Looks much more complicated than it really is. What a great project for when you need a gift in a hurry. Even a child could put this together and have a really stunning quilt. Thanks for sharing.
If you Google "Disappearing nine patch" you will get lots of examples of this pattern and a couple of tutorials on how to make them. I was just in a swap in another group where we exchanged nine patches made of black and white prints with a bright TOT in the center. I got mine back Monday and they are great. I have 30 nine inch blocks to play with. I may make some more so I can make a bed size quilt from it.
I 100% LOVE these! However, I looked around at the tutorial that Cookie posted and I spotted another placement variation on this "Disappearing Nine Patch" block! I had to try one and I found myself chuckling the whole time! These are “Happy Blocks” PERSONIFIED!!!
A super sweet friend brought me some fabric from Hawaii, and I told her I was going to make a little wall hanging for her. She said she likes bright colors and a little whimsy! The green fabric didn't photograph accurate. It's actually kind of a bright lime green.
This took nooo time at all to make, and if you were doing several blocks it would be very easy to strip piece them in rapid fashion!!! Of course ... I'm a lil' anal so I had to fussy cut my novelty fabric...
I've printed off both the tutorials, and already have them neatly tucked in my personal block book! I can NOT get the link to open again to post this block placement. The printing on the page bottom reads: www.myquiltblog.com/nancyrose/4624
I did spot a photo error on the tutorial. Maybe she's fixing it?
Thanks! They really are a hoot! Good catch on the fish angles. Yes...I had to think that concept through for a second and visualize what I wanted (I wanted them kissing). I fussy cut the fish blocks using the diagonal line on a template to angle them up and down (but then you have to remember that you’re going to swap diagonal corners with them) after you quarter the block. For a second I got a mini-brain kink...lol There was a photograph error on the tutorial which threw me off for a minute too. But, when I cut the blocks out I laid them out and made SURE I had it right. I didn’t have too much of the fish fabric so I had to get it right the first time...lol
Also.. .I placed my mirroring tool against the block to see what it would look like with 3 more around it and that block would have almost put them in a circular wreath look. I was surprised.
Anyhow.. it was just toooo fun! I think everyone should try one!!! Cute AND fast! What more could a person ask for!!
