I found this site listed in another discussion on string quilts. Really like the look of some of these, and, more importantly, think I have tons of scraps to make one.
What is the significance of the name? I could not find any guidelines with the website for this block. Looking at the pictures, there seems to be no set number in the stack nor even any set dimension, other than being rectangles. What am I missing? Can someone point me in the right direction?
Meg, the whole site is a puzzle. I did not understand why this project was begun and who would benefit from the quilts. Or is this a "something to do when we don't know what to do" kind of project? There were various designs and sizes, yet in the main page they gave guidelines which cannot be appllied to all the quilts.
I felt the whole thing was strange. But just as I see things in a different way, so do others. And the Chinese Coins is another example. There are more than one variation of a pattern.
Actually, June, I hadn't even considered your points, which are valid. I guess the reason why was because I wasn't planning on making the quilt for them- I just wanted to use up my scraps! LOL How's that for being self-absorbed! LOL Actually, I was thinking that it would make a nice bright, colorful quilt to put on one of the beds at my mother's cabin. With all the sand and pine needles the grands drag in, I sure don't want to be putting any heirloom quilts on those beds!
So, Gerda, I take it there really isn't any pattern. More like controlled chaos! The term is more of a technique than an actual pattern.
P. S. In case any one is wondering- Christmas is coming soon! How do I know? My hulking teenager just brought me an unexpected treat of toast and cocoa! Hmmm? Must be something pretty big on his wish list! New tires for the truck, maybe? LOL
To find out more about the Heartstrings Quilt project you need to visit their website. You were just at the blog. They collect string squares and put them together to make tops and then quilts that they donate to tons of charities. I know that currently they are sending some out to California to victims of the fires. But they send them all over. There is a list on the website of places/groups they have sent them too. Sometimes they do "challenges" or special projects. That is what the chinese coins was. Here is a link to the website: http://heartstringsquiltproject.com/index.html The photos of the quilts are great. It is neat how they are using all the blocks from all over the world to make the quilts.
