Carol-

Now why do you suppose that is? Were you paying attention in history class? LOL Think about FDR and his New Deal. Need another hint? Do the letters TVA mean anything to you?

The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) was created in 1933. Its purpose was to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, and economic development to an area particulary impacted by the Great Depression.

Its jurisdiction covers parts of Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Gerogia, Virginia, Mississppi, and North Carolina.

Studying the history of the names of quilt blocks is a delightful way to study the history of our nation as well. Women expressed their opinions about the world around them, current events, what was important to them through their quilt designs.

Okay, history lesson done- back to the game!

My Dad served in the CCC during the 30's, when he was in his teens, on sites in CT and VT that became part of the state and national parks system.

He worked on crews that cut the first ski trails in Stowe, Vt, and one of the original ski lodges was the old CCC building. He worked on many of hiking trails on Mt Mansfield and used to take us back there sometimes to camp, such as here:

Meg,

I used to have fun with stamp collecting for the same reason - there's history behind all the old stamps!

Maybe I'll work "Quilt Block Origins" into the curriculum for DS2 (homeschooled!)... LOL - he'd die!

OH, and a block name...
