Nan's Naiad (Dear Jane Block)

I don't know if there are any more blocks that begin with X. This makes me think about designing a block just so I can give it a name that begins with X. LOL Suellen

, Suellen to BC!

If you drop into the "Introductions" thread and say hello and tell us a little about yourself, everyone will enjoy giving you a proper welcome to the boards.

Have you made a "Dear Jane Quilt"? So intricate ...

I love the End of the Day too. I wonder if you can sew that into strips and cut them instead of paper piecing?
I like the Michigan too, I might try that with softer colored centers.

Falling Timbers

http://www.earlywomenmasters.net/quilts/f/fallingtimbers/index.html

This pattern first appeared about 1932. The name really intrigues me. Is it a reference to the dangerous profession of lumbering? Broken branches that get hung up in the trees can blow down unexpectedly in even a slight breeze and kill a man standing below. Such branches are known as widow-makers.

Is it a reference to the Emily Dickenson poem about a man trapped in falling timbers (A burning house? a collapsed mine?) and the efforts of those trying to rescue him?

In falling Timbers buried --
There breathed a Man --
Outside -- the spades -- were plying --
The Lungs -- within --

Could He -- know -- they sought Him --
Could They -- know -- He breathed --
Horrid Sand Partition --
Neither -- could be heard --

Never slacked the Diggers --
But when Spades had done --
Oh, Reward of Anguish,
It was dying -- Then --

Many Things -- are fruitless --
'Tis a Baffling Earth --
But there is no Gratitude
Like the Grace -- of Death --

Or is it a misspelled reference to the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the last major battle of the American Revolution? The decisive victory for General "Mad" Anthony Wayne and his troops over British and Native American forces and the signing of the Treaty of Greenville opened an area for westward expansion and the admittance of the Ohio territory to the Union as the 17th state. Without it, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin might all be part of Canada right now.

Now here is your trivia for today. Did you know that the state of Ohio and I are the same age? It's true, when Ohio celebrated its sesquicentennial, one of the observances was to trace the route of the courier who carried the papers by horseback of statehood to Washington, D.C. During the trip, it was discovered that he had become ill and died at an inn along the way. The papers never made it to D.C.

The obvious implication of that is that income tax and all other legislation enacted under any of the eight U.S. President's from Ohio is null and void since they were technically not citizens of the United States and could not legally sign any bill into law. I suspect the legislation to rectify that situation and make Ohio a state retroactively was the fastest legislation ever enacted by the U.S Congress!

I like the Michigan block, too, for obvious reasons, but whoever designed the page must have been an Ohio State fan. Michigan's seal is blue! LOL

This would be so cute for a child's quilt.

Oh, that Reflections of Love is so pretty! What a nice 2-color quilt that would make! Speaking of having to learn paper piecing...
