to BC, Kylie!I am still an newbie to BC as I have only been here since January, but already I feel as if I have made many friends. I have been quilting a little over three years. I consider myself an "experienced beginner" and probably will for a long time. There is so much to learn and BC is a great place for such. I am happy to see that you signed up for May Happy Blocks and it looks like you are the first one to have your blocks completed. WTG! What other projects do you have in the works? |

Kylie, welcome from Canada! central Alberta, actually!
Crazy quilt blocks are easy - do not try a huge cloth - you can either sew odd pieces together without a foundation, or use a fabric (usually muslin) square, say 10-12" square, place a smallish (about 4") piece in the centre, facing up. Next piece can be long, odd shaped, whatever. Lay that facing DOWN along one edge of the centre piece, and stitch. Press open. (Remember in quilting/piecing, you PRESS not iron!) You can trim along the way. Next piece can either go along that opened piece, or along another edge. I'll see if I can find some pics to go with this. Paper piecing takes a bit of practice and getting used to - you are sewing "backwards" so to speak. I'll look for a tutorial for you. Grandmother's Fan is a lovely block - will you be appliqueing the fan to the background piece or is it a curved seam? I have done both. Don't let curves scare you (by the way, have you ever sewn clothes? If so, you will have dealt with curves) or blocks that others say are not beginner blocks - I have seen first ever quilts that were ALL curves (Double Wedding Ring for one). Perhaps start with a simple 9 patch to practice your scant 1/4" seams, then work up to a ShooFly with half square triangles, and work your way up. Taking a beginner's class is invaluable if you are able. Books and TV shows help too, and of course WE are always here to answer any questions. Gerda A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels. Keep looking UP! When it seems there is no way out, there is always a way up! |

http://alliesinstitches.blogspot.com/2007/06/block-piecing-tutorial.html this is a crazy quilt block tutorial
http://www.needlepointers.com/displaypage.aspx?ArticleI...essons%2fpiecing.htm Paper piecing http://www.quiltingbydesign.net/category/tutorials-by-others/ SEveral listings here: http://results.about.com/quilting/ Have you checked out your local library for books? and www.quilterscache.com has tons of patterns, easy to hard and great explanations/pics. I hope this helps. Oh, and for the crazy blocks, to start you don't have to embroider them, just stitch the blocks. Have fun!! Gerda A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels. Keep looking UP!
