Deb,

We lived in Florida long enough for my mother to acquire a taste for frog legs and hush puppies. I prefer burgoo or chicken livers and dirty rice.

deb, i do believe meg knows quite a bit about the subjects - BUT does she have personal experience??? nothing beats personal experiences to really get the feel for such activities, do you not agree?? i think we should invite her for a visit as well - it would be such fun - sharing meals, visiting quilt shops and fabric stores, frog gigging, chit-chatting and really getting to know each other, snipe hunting . . . why i do believe i have an itinerary ready . . . deb, don;t forget the gunnysacks . . .

Cindy-

Your turn for some light reading. LOL

http://www.angelfire.com/ky/burgoo/

Y'all don't really mean to tell lil' ole' me that a Yankee gal knows mo' 'bout a Southern speciality than y'all?!?!? Why Miz Scarlett, I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthing no burgoo!

Actually, rural central Ohio often has a southern feel to it. Our farmhouse had a summer kitchen for example. One of our neighbors was from Kentucky originally, every year in the fall he had a burgoo (it is the event as well as the dish).

There is a restaurant in Royal Oak (other side of Detroit) called Memphis Grill and Blues Bar. Burgoo is on the menu. So when y'all come up to go hunt snow snakes and go ice fishing, we will stop in for a bowl.

well i must admit that this southern belle has never been acquainted with "burgoo" - but i spect if you make it with possum (now just why do they insist on putting an "o" in the front" EVERYONE knows it's a possum!!! but, i digress . . .) if it is made with possum, then it is possible that we would know the concoction by it's more formal name of "roadkill stew" . . . and no, that is NOT something i have tried nor am i willing to try . . . yuckkkkkkkkkk Big Grin

never saw burgoo on the menu at the rendevous in memphis - and the rendevous is world famous for its BBQ!

just goes to show, we can all learn something from each other!!

Armadillo? In Louisiana? I thought that would be a Texas speciality. Does it taste like chicken?

Actually, Cindy, I don't think the burgoo I had ever had road kill in it and probably not 'possum, either. It was a combination of domesticated meat and venison, waterfowl (he was an avid duck hunter) and pheasant. Very, very tasty.

Meg,yes Armadillo abound in Louisiana. I can't travel down our road without seeing "road kill" which consists of 'possum and armadillo!

It tastes like wild meat! What can I say it depends on how you cook it. My mother could take all of the wild game my Dad brought it and make it taste like pot roast. I just learned never to ask! lol
