This is another post that may not be in the right place. It isn't about software, per se. I am having a problem with my printer. Until I can get it diagnosed and repaired, I am concerned that I may miss some of the BOM's I am collecting that are only posted for one month. I know OKnana, Betty, and Gerda, among others, save the files to their computer. How do you do it?
I am such a tactile learner that I have always made a hard copy. If I just bookmark it to my favorites, it won't save the page, right? Do I need to copy it and put it in my hard drive? Or on a CD? LOL Ladies, I am finally learning the lingo, now I just need to learn the practical application to go with it! LOL At this rate, I may be ready to join the 21st century in 15 or 20 years! LOL Meg Proud Coastie Mom http://www.myquiltblog.com/ohiorose53/ http://www.serialquilters.com/ohiorose53 I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend, til death, you're right to say it. Meg, it is not hard at all! I have a main file on my desktop (computer screen) labelled "Quilt Stuff" - how unique!
When I am on the web page of the pattern I want to save, I go to FILE up at the top left of your screen (file, edit, view, etc) Click on "Save As". A menu will pop up of the files on your desktop showing most/all of the files on your computer. If you have set one up called "Quilty stuff or whatever", click on that one. A new menu will show off all the files in that main file. Pick the subfile you want, click on that - this will open that particular file. When you have that chosen, click "save" - the computer will now save that webpage/PDF to that particular file. Now you can go back later and retrieve it or read it or print it. Is that clear as mud?? EG Block Central's BOM - open the current page (or whichever month's file you want) - Click on FILE, click on Save As - Pick the subfile (if your specific main file has been picked) and double click (left) - this will open the subfile - Click on the Save button on the menu - Done!! Let me know if you still have trouble. I only print off something that I think I will be using soon - less ink! I also try at least once a year to back up all my files on a CD (used to be floppies) - that way, should the unthinkable happen and my machine crashes, I still have all the files. I will be on here off and on today - trying to pack - had to run errands this morning that HAD to be done today Gerda A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels. Keep looking UP! When it seems there is no way out, there is always a way up! |

Sorry Meg, I just read this, but looks like Gerda has ya set up to go on the know how. I am notorious though for going ahead and printing it out!! WHY??? I don't know! LOL! That is why I have lots and lots of notebooks of patterns too. Someday when I have time, I will finish getting them all organized is my plan. I have several done, but have a big box of patterns. Hum, wonder what is in the bottom of the box? LOL! Beats me! LOL.
Gerda, take lots of rest breaks today packing! Different BOM Sites for your Enjoyment! http://www.bomquilts.com/bom_traditional.html Happy moments, PRAISE GOD. Difficult moments, SEEK GOD. Quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD. Painful moments, TRUST GOD. Every moment, THANK GOD. MAY YOU ALWAYS HAVE LOVE TO SHARE, HEALTH TO SPARE, AND QUILT FRIENDS THAT CARE. It's not what you gather, But what you Scatter that tells what kind of Life you have lived. |

Thanks for your input ladies. I won't get a chance to try this until tomorrow. I am having lunch in Ann Arbor with my sister and mother. This evening I have church. Somewhere in there I need to get a cake baked.
This is similar to moving files in word processing, from one folder to another, right? That I have done, but never from the internet. Wow! This will be three things I've learned in a week- how to make .pdf files, how to upload an avatar, and how to save a file to open later! The learning curve is taking a huge leap! LOL Meg Proud Coastie Mom http://www.myquiltblog.com/ohiorose53/ http://www.serialquilters.com/ohiorose53 I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend, til death, you're right to say it. When I showed DH about doing this, he expressed some concern about the files disappearing once they were removed from the host site. Seems he lost some that way. Does this mean I missed something in the explanation? Do I need to take them out of .pdf format or somehow disconnect them them from the host site? I am thinking I would like to keep them as .pdf's, but save them to a CD. Is there a way to do that?

Remember the scene in "Grease" where the school secretary plays the little xylophone for the "Announcements, announcements, announcements!"? Well, that is just the mood I am in right now.
Thanks to Gerda, Doreen, and Jacqui, I have successfully saved the past two or three months to my hard drive and just finished saving them to a CD, and I only lost one file. This is huge for me! The way I know I am successfully getting the hang of this technology stuff is that I only had a slight to moderate urge to murder my husband while doing it! LOL Either I am asking better questions or he has resigned himself to quit second-guessing me! LOL Just wanted to thank you ladies for your excellant instructions, and give credit where credit is due. Kudos to you all. Betty, did your daughter manage to get your stuff saved from your old computer (that crashed??) I never did hear. PS I STILL haven't backed mine up - bad Gerda!! I must do that soon - it's almost 3 years ago that I last did it. Whoops!!!
If you still need all my files, let me know, 'k? Gerda A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels. Keep looking UP! When it seems there is no way out, there is always a way up! |

And I agree about the ink and paper - much easier, too, to look up files on the computer, rather than go through reams of pages.

Gerda, her computer guy has been very ill so I don't know yet...just hold off until I get a word on it. I keep asking and she says she can't get him so who knows!
In the meantime if I need something I'll let you know! Betty "A friend is a second self."
