If I want to put a lace edge for a border, do I need to add it before I send it to the quilter or wait till she is finished?

Jenell,
I'm no expert on this but I did do a baby quilt one time that I added a ruffle around the edge of the body of the quilt with the border behind the ruffle. I had to put the ruffle in before I quilted it..... would not have worked the other way.

Are you planning to have the lace between the top of the quilt and the back of the quilt?... sort of extending from the edge? If your quilter stitches right to the edge, I would think that you'll have difficulty adding the lace after the quilting stitches. Does your quilter do the border or will you finish it when the quilting is finished?

I guess asking the quilter for her opinion might be the safest thing to do. Good luck! I'm sure it will turn out fantastic.

Jennell-

A million years ago when I worked for Hancock's, they used to carry an edging for finishing the pre-quilted baby panels. It was an eyelet lace ruffle that had sort of a double fold bias tape on it. On edge of the bias tape was sewn on, it was folded over and either sewn down by hand or top stitched. Since it often came in fabrics to coordinate with the panels, it went on last. I will look and see it I can find it.

Just wanted to thank you for this thread. I love making baby quilts and I had no idea they made ruffled binding for the edges.
Wow, ideas for this are wonderful.
Thanks for the links.

I love that ruffled binding too! But I have already bought a crocheted lace to add as Jean said, between the layers to extend out from the quilt. I guess I should have thought about it longer, but I just decided this week to get it quilted instead of doing it myslef. Apparently, if I don't change plans right in the middle of it, it's not my quilt! LOL

The quilt show is tommorow so I will carry it with me and find someone that can do what I am thinking. It just adds to the victorian flavor of it with the lace edge.

Jennell- You can easily make that lace into a ruffled binding, using double fold bias tape. Open one fold of the bias tape, place it right side up. Pin the lace along the opened crease. Open another length of tape, laying it wrong side up and pin to the lace.

You should have a sandwich, with the right sides of the bias to the inside and the lace in between. Stitch in the ditch carefully along the crease, catching the lace in the stitching. Trim the seam, and voila! Easy peasy!

With this technique, you can also make ruffled binding to coordinate with your quilt. Wouldn't that look pretty on some feminine floral quilt for a lady's boudoir? Or on a sweet and dainty quilt for some charming and innocent young girl? Or you could make a pleated ruffle on a quilt for dad of hubby- the applications are endless.
