You would be so proud of me. I had no idea how to cook those silly pole beans. Remembered that my girlfriend's dad was from the south so asked her. Tonight we had boiled dinner- beans, potatoes, onions and ham. I made cornbread, from scratch, thank you very much; and we had cucumber spears and tomato wedges from our garden. It was nippy here today; thought I could warm up the house a bit without having to turn on the furnace. By the time I was done, I told DH to ice that sweet tea and open the dang door! Now I know I should have baked a red velvet cake as the perfect ending, but I made a lemon poppyseed instead. DS2 went over and helped his grandpa so thought he should be rewarded.
Meg Pass me the eft overs please. This is my kind of good eats! Yum Yum

You all make me so jealous with cooking...just recently I had to move in with my daughter & her 2 kids....can u say total crazyiness -no set time for meals and if its not fast food its something out of a box. This isn't the way she was raised and its driving me nuts, but i have to keep my mouth shut-not easy let me tell you.

Maybe you could start a "grandma" conversation about "the good old days" and talk about how families used to have a nice meal together on Sunday. Maybe you could offer to fix them an "old-fashioned Sunday dinner." If it goes well, offer to fix such a meal every other Sunday. Offer to teach the children to cook. I was cooking, with supervision, before I was in school, and I taught my boys the same way.
The older boy is a better cook than his wife. Although in her favor, I have to admit she does know how to filet fresh fish, and gut a deer! Talk about role reversals! She was raised in Michigan's Upper Peninsula; her dad taught her to appreciate the out-of-doors! Their a good match, those two.
Msplantladi It is good to see you posting, maybe you can work something out so that one night a week she has the night off and you can fix a meal if that is possible for you or maybe a corck pot meal, it would sure be less expensive as well as good for you.

Meg I haven't given up but its a challenge-1 child has OCD & ADD, both children very spoiled as far as matieral items, not so much on attention but the lil personalities this has created isn't always pleasant. As far as the cooking meals, I now after much hassle just cook for myself if its something the kids think they might like thats fine I am willing to share. Most of the time if its not fast food at 9 pm its the kids searching in the pantry or freezer, just not a huge priority in my daughters mind. Hopefully this is a temporary living situation for me.

oh msplantladi (sorry! i have yet to get your given name in sync with your screen name!! one of these days i will tho!) i feel for you somewhat. my oldest daughter and her daughter live with us and i don't always agree with decisions she makes and yes it is VERY hard to bite your tongue and keep quiet, but they have to make & learn from their own mistakes too. thankfully, tho, this is our house and i still rule my kitchen! LOL i still try to insist that fast food is a "treat" not the norm, but i do have to admit, there is more fast food brought home than when my girls were little and i am just as guilty as emily as bringing it home myself!! ah well, life is always going to offer us challenges of one form or another . . .
anyway, last night i fixed a very simple dinner for billy & i - NOW THAT is a rare occurance, just the 2 of us for a meal at our house and not a restaurant!! but i digress - "mock" salisbury steaks with a mushroom gravy, bakes potatoes (fresh taters at that - had to wash the dirt off first!!! yummmmm) and lima beans. like i said, simple, but OH SO good . . .
