Apparently there were 34 tornadoes in three different parts of the U.S. yesterday, Jacqui. I did not know it was that extensive until I saw the news this morning.
There has only been one reported death in Georgia, which is surprising since they normally don't get tornadoes and aren't drilled like the people in the midwest are in preperation for them. The thing that really amazed me was that the Oklahoma twister didn't do more damage and cause more deaths. It was an F4; not only was it an intensely severe storm, but it stayed on the ground for over an hour and traveled at least 71 miles. Highly unusual behavior for a tornado. I think with global warming we are going to witness more and more of these really severe storms. Early detection and warning systems will be worth their weight in gold when it comes to saving lives. I'm afraid you may be right about that Pam. We rarely see tornadoes here in WA (Western Australia) and when we do they are much smaller than their US counterparts. We usually call them Willy Willies if they're really small and Cock Eyed Bobs if they're are larger. Two or three years ago we had a tornado hit some suburbs of Perth ripping up trees and seriously damaging houses. Luckily most of the houses in Perth are built with double brick walls so the damage was much less severe than it might have been.
Scary stuff and its given us a small insight to how difficult it must be to live in areas prone to tornadoes. Having and increase in the numbers of tornadoes is a frightening thought. Melita |

Glad our Okies are OK!
As for Georgia, Suzanne lives there, and a friend of Cindy's, too. Also, I think Debo is in NE Alabama, so she might have been close, too. Oh, and Meg, Tata is in South Carolina, close enough. I pray everyone stays safe this year. Gerda A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels. Keep looking UP! When it seems there is no way out, there is always a way up! |
