Vicky thanks for your tip, so Our Lids can fit tight.

Kat, How sweet of you to take care of family for your DH.

Michelle, it was hard to settle on what I wanted to put in my jars too!

Like Jean, I think this could be addicting!! I'd love to find some Corn, Tators, blackeyed peas, and okra!! Not to can but to EAT!!! ROFL!!!
My Daddy always said Beans and tators were food that would stick to your ribs! YUM! I love to be in a pea patch!!!! It's been years since I did that though!!! It was with my Moma in 1993 I think. Good ole days!

Oh Kat you have my prayers! lol My dmil is deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other very well. She has a $2500 hearing aid that you cannot tell she's wearing but she can't stand the background noise and refuses to wear it. So when we are there you have to yell for her to hear. She can't hear me at all some days. I have one of those voices that I could yell and if you are not right by me you can't hear me.

I go through this every Monday and Friday! lol
There has to be a special place in heaven for us.

You know we could have just had a solid background and appliqued that jar and lid on with no problem at all. I might just applique my lid on so it'll fit properly!

I have my fabric ready, I just need to stay home long enough to get it cut out!

Dorene,
You make me think of my Momma. When we were little and did not want to eat what she had cooked. You know how kids can be, and there were five of us born in seven years. She would tell us that "steak and potatoes" stick to your ribs. That was the good old days of raising potatoes in the garden, and raising beef for the freezer. We also had fresh peas and corn every year.

I had never had black eyed peas and okra until I got married, and they are not some of my favorite foods. I was a home grown Idaho girl.

I also remember going up and down the ditch banks and picking asparagus. Now that I am getting hungry, I guess I better go...

Thanks for the happy memories of my Mom and Dad.
Vicky

Vicky, now THAT was a real memory jogger for me! Picking asparagus! My brother and I used to go with Mom along the railroad track behind our farm. There were huge beds of asparagus there. I hated the stuff, but enjoyed picking it! We also used to pick wild strawberries there - they are tiny, much smaller than the garden variety, but OH SO SWEET! My hubby still loves to pick wild raspberries every summer (so I can make jelly!)

Growing up, we always had a huge garden - row after row of sweet corn, a huge bed of potatoes, rows of beans, tomatoes, peppers, etc. And guess where I spent many long hot days? Hoeing!!!! But it didn't kill me and it instilled a love of the soil, of growing things, and an appreciate of what it takes to have really good food! I still have a garden, although not nearly as large. Still can my own green beans and tomato juice, and we still raise our own beef, chickens, and occasionally a hog or two. I even can my own beef - nothing beats it for beef and noodles, or stew!

All of which reminds me - I need to get off this computer and go feed the calves - just got 3 more bottle babies in this week, and they're no doubt wanting their breakfast!!

OHHHHHHHH! the memories this swap has stirred.
I grew up with neighbors that always had a big garden. But there was 14 in that family thats how they could afford the food by growing it. I had more fun in that garden. There was
everything Strawberries, Corn, blackeyed peas, green beans, you name it she grew it, what she didn't grew we searched for along the fence row, or the creek bed (Wild Onions), In a thicket, Sand Plums and big fat juicy Blackberries. I can taste them now. But what made it so fun was the fact that we got to eat what we picked... I later canned with my mom because the neigbor would send some home with us, But she would work out a deal with mom that if mom would do the pickles, chow chow, Catsup, tomatoes sauce, pickled beats, mom even learned to sugar cure ham and bacon but she drew the line when the neighbor tried to get her to pickle the brains and other organ meats, BOY was I glad, she would swap out other veggies with us so we did for years. My family never knew what it was to eat a store bought pickle until the neighbor passed away. I was married for 15 years before that happened My family still misses it.
Well I have 3 of my jars done so I'm sending a picture.
