Hi everyone,

I'm proposing another swap. I want to do the ugly squares quilt that we were discussing in the stash swap. And to keep things simple I'm going to set the rules up front and not add or delete anything as we go along. Wink

We will swap an ugly quilt made from 5 inch squares of ugly fabric. I will send out the first squares and everyone that joins can add from 1 - 5 more ugly squares to the quilt. Each square must be a separate fabric.

If we have enough swappers we will make a lap quilt that will consist of eight rows of six blocks. If we end up with more than 48 squares we will make a larger quilt, if we end up with less than 48 squares we can make a wall hanging or a table topper.

I will send out a label with the first squares that everyone can sign and date. This will travel with the quilt and be sewn onto the quilt by the winner of the quilt.

I will ask someone on the forum that is not involved in the swap to draw names at the end for the winner of the quilt. The winner will receive the quilt top and the label and will be responsible for the quilting and binding of the quilt. We would hope that each of us would commit to doing this in a timely manner so the rest of us can admire "OUR UGLY QUILT".

We will each have 10 days once we receive the quilt to add our squares and send it off to the next swapper. That way if we have 10 or more swappers we can still finish this quilt in a timely manner.

I will take sign ups until midnight on Saturday the 15th of July. I will send out email notices on Monday the 17th that will include who is sending the quilt top to you and who you are sending it to and email addresses for each. That way we can be in contact with each other and keep track of where the top is and maybe this will help insure it's safe journey around the group.

If I already have your contact info from the stash swap you don't have to send it to me again, but you will need to let me know on this thread that you are in for this swap. If I don't have your contact info please send it to nawma1@yahoo.com or PM me here on the forum. I will need your mailing address and your email address.

I would ask that you send the top Priority with a receipt acknowledgement. This will be a bit more expensive but will help us ensure that our ugly little quilt will not get lost in all it's travels.

I was thinking that we might start with four squares joined together in two rows. Then we could add squares around that center. When the rows need to be four or five squares long and the swapper only has three squares that are not attached she will sew those three squares together and send that row with the quilt for the next swapper to add to and sew onto the quilt. The idea here being to add to a square quilt so it grows proportionally and can be used whether it gets large enough to make a lap quilt out of or not. Ex. A square of 5 rows with 5 squares in each row would make a nice wall hanging or table topper. Because each swapper has the choice of how many squares to add we will not be able to determine the overall size until we get to the end of the list.

Ok, I think that is all the info I need to include here. Hope you guys will join up to make "Our Ugly Quilt".

Look for a PM with a different mailing address due to having to sign for the priority mail.

Thanks!

Connie, one BIG question you need to clarify right from the start: You said the ugly quilt will be made from 5" squares! Is that 5 inch cut size which would result in 4 1/2 inch finished squares - or do we cut the squares 5 1/2 inches so the finished size is 5 inches? I'm assuming the latter, but this does need to be clarified.

I've dug through some boxes and have come up with 5 pieces that will work for this. While they might not be classed as truly "ugly", they are "unusual" or "unattractive" or "homely" enough to fit in with the rest of the uglies!

Also found a piece of yardage that I think will work for the 1 yard swap. Since we have to take this out of our own swap and not buy something, I had to dig to find something that was bigger than 1/2 yard!

OK - I'm all set now. Just waiting to hear who's name I got, and for the ugly quilt to appear at my house!!

Yes Nola you are right we need to clarify the size of the squares. They should be cut to 5 1/2 inches so they will sew into the quilt at 5 inches. Smile Smile
